Rule 2.17 Information Page

Beginning on May 1, 2023, judicial officers around the state will have the authority to allow news media into their courtrooms to record, photograph, and broadcast court proceedings that are not confidential. Rule 2.17 of the Code of Judicial Conduct has been amended by the Indiana Supreme Court. An order amending Rule 2.17, effective May 1, 2023, gives the discretion to allow cameras to the local judges.

This covers the application of Rule 2.17 of the Code of Judicial Conduct for Marion Superior Court and Marion Circuit Court, Indiana. For ease of use, you can register as a regular user, and this site will also display existing media requests on other cases that are on review, authorized or denied by the court.

Marion County courts require Media to submit requests 5 business days prior to the hearing. Media members have to certify for each request on the submission form certify that they meet the definition of news media as defined in Comment [2] of the Indiana Code of Judicial Conduct Rule 2.17.  

“[2] News media is defined as persons employed by or representing a newspaper, periodical, press association, radio station, television station, or wire service and covered by Ind. Code § 34-46-4-1.”
